community newsStacking up lifeMonday, 28 July 2008 For some they could just been piles of stuff we’ve accumulated over the years waiting to be tided away, flogged on or donated to charity. To others they are art, representing a cultural history that needs documenting not disposing. Brighton based photographer Mark Vessey is one of the later and by grasping gay cultural history by the short and curlies, this most observant of recorders has compressed decades of gay history into a series of stacks – books, CDs and DVDs – which reflect a whole world and particular experience. “I’m excited by the thought that most people have their own history surrounding them in their own homes,” said the Essex-born, Brighton-based photographer. “This collection of images celebrates everything that makes gay men what we are today – from Oscar Wilde to Wildboys do New York.” Take a peek at his stacked view throughout August at London’s The Box and see what our homes say about the homo in us.
